מאי סונגו // Beneath the Silence

דימונה, העיר שבה גדלתי, שקטה ועטופה בנוף מדברי שליו מהווה השראה לקולקציה שלי וחושפת את הדואליות בין חזות רגועה לבין מציאות מבעבעת. בעוד העיר מקרינה תחושה נינוחה ושקטה, הקרבה למפעלים כימיים ולכור הגרעיני יוצרת איום מתמיד – זיהום, קרינה וסכנות סביבתיות בלתי נראות אך מוחשיות. המדבר, כמעטפת אסתטית, מערפל את הקיום הזה, אך התהיות תמיד מהדהדות בראש ומערערות את תחושת הביטחון הקיומי.

ברובד החברתי, רבים מתושבי העיר – עולים מצפון אפריקה – הוצבו בה ללא בחירה כדי לספק כוח עבודה למפעלים ונאלצו לוותר על מלאכות יד מסורתיות ויצירתיות לטובת עבודה רפטטיבית בפסי ייצור.

בקולקציית בגדי הגברים שלי, אני שואבת השראה מבגדי עבודה לצד נופי המדבר: טקסטורות גולמיות, עבודות ידניות, צבעוניות מדברית מול תעשייתית, כיסים, רצועות ותפרים גסים, שילוב של בדים קשיחים ורכים.

דרך אלו אני מבקשת לספר סיפור של קהילה שנשארה בצל, ולהאיר את המתח שבין טבע, תעשייה וזהות אנושית.

Dimona, the city where I grew up, is quiet and surrounded by calm desert views. But beneath the peaceful surface lies a deeper tension. The city is close to chemical factories and a nuclear reactor, which creates a constant fear of pollution, radiation, and hidden environmental risks. The desert may look calm and beautiful, but it hides a reality that many people worry about.

Many of the city’s residents came from North Africa in the 1950s and were placed in Dimona without a choice. They had to leave behind creative, traditional crafts and work long hours in factories, doing hard, repetitive jobs.

My menswear collection is inspired by this contrast—between the natural desert and the heavy industry. I use rough textures, handmade details, desert and industrial colors, big pockets, thick straps, and strong seams. Through this, I tell the story of a community caught between silence and struggle, between nature, work, and identity.
